The Porta Marina entrance to the city of Pompeii Helen on her Holidays
12th October 2023 by Helen Visiting Pompeii, the ancient Roman city in southern Italy that was destroyed by a volcano, is on a lot of people's travel bucket lists - it had been on mine since I was little! Before I visited Pompeii I felt quite overwhelmed about the best way to visit, so I did a ton of research.

There's the Porta Marina entrance (and adjacent Piazza Esedra) at the southwest of the site, and the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance at the southeast of the site. Porta Marina is the main entrance and it's where you can get an audioguide. It's also closest to the main attractions in Pompeii.

The reopening of the archaeological site of Pompeii of the recent weeks has seen an important increase in tourist flows. In order to facilitate access in the site from 7 June, is foreseen the suspension of the closing day on Monday for the whole summer period and the reopening of the entrance of Porta Marina Superiore which is in addition to the already operational gates of Piazza Esedra and.

Porta Marina is the most famous entrance among visitors to Pompeii. It is located on the opposite side of Pompeii Scavi Station and provides many amenities like information kiosks, stores that sell souvenirs, etc.

Pompeii has three entrances with Porta Marina being the one most tourists will use. From here, you can store any bags you have, use the restroom and, most importantly, pick up a map. Once you enter, you're more or less free to explore the ruins at your own leisure. Some sites might be roped off, but generally, you can walk anywhere you like.

Enter the city at Porta Marina Superiore, one of the ancient city's 7 gates and Walk the main streets and wander around the Forum, the old heart of the city and the center of public life. From here you can see Mount Vesuvius overlooking the city.

The name derives from the fact that the exit road led to the sea. The layout with a barrel vault made of concrete, that is a mixture of mortar and stones, dates back to the Silla colony (80 BC). The gate has two fornix, the main one being higher, intended for the passage of horses and pack animals; the smaller one, intended for pedestrian passage.
